Recently, I have been playing with some different color combinations.  In this piece I used
two different sets of compliments; the blue violet and yellow orange are the dominant and
focal colors while the red orange and blue green act as accents and directional elements.

I wanted to stick with the square format for the cat project,
but this stretched out little kitty was just begging
to be painted in the portrait format.  Love those furry paws.

I did not think ahead, cat #13 should have been a black cat but no one has sent one in yet.  Maybe
I'll get a few for Halloween.  I am not sure if this cat was a Lavender Point but the the colors of
the photo had a lot of violet tones.  I exaggerated the hue and set it off with a bright Cad Orange. 
I used a different technique with my brush strokes which worked well with the features of this cat.

This was a beautiful colorful cat and the reflective light brought out more colors.

This is not the final but it clouded over before I could take the final picture. 
The only difference is the white spot on the ear on the right is gone.  I must have
been flipping my brush around.  The challenge on this work was blending
the cream colors to give the appearance of volume.

I wanted the background to have a texture giving the illusion of a screen.  To accomplish this I used
a stiff bristle brush with very little water.  By making all my strokes vertical and simply indicating
the trees and bushes through various values and hues helped create this illusion.

Posting times

I am reposting cat #8. I was not satisfied with it and reworked it today. I am going to start posting in the morning rather than the evening. I have been painting until about 5:00 and rushing to get the painting completed and posted before the sun goes down. Unfortunately I have not had the time to critique my work and have not been completely satisfied with some of the work. I usually sit my work in a spot where I walk past and catch glimpses of the work.  Often I am happy with it but sometimes there is one little tweak, and I have  a better painting.  I finished cat #9 today and was very happy with it except for one little spot.  I will rework that spot and send it out tomorrow morning.

I was not satisfied with yesterday's painting and worked on it again today. 
I like this on better.  The darker shadow pulls the cat back.

On this particular painting I used a glazing technique.  Thin washes of paint
layered on top of each other to give a feeling of depth to the colors.

This Arizona lizard chaser started out in a completely different palette. 
About three quarters of the way through I made a 180 on color.  I like this one.

The challenge on this cat was to capture the whites and give the illusion of depth. 
I like the lost edges on the cats chest and windowsill.

This image is almost abstract.  I liked the composition because the negative space
 became as important to the painting as the positive space.  It was fun to play with
the light, shadow and reflection.

This multicolor cat was a challenge to paint.  At first I thought he was gray and white but as I worked on the painting I noticed hues of brown and tan and reflected colors of purples and and oranges.  Consequently I worked into the evening and was unable to photograph the completed painting.  I guess I will need to start painting earlier.

A few weeks ago I took a workshop from Bob Burridge call Loosen Up;
this is me loosening up!  I really like the intensity of the color and the layers of translucent paint.

This was a fun cat to paint.  The viewpoint is low with a nice perspective.  I exaggerated the lighting for a more dramatic effect and worked with a very limited palette of 3 colors and 2 neutrals.

My cats are apparently unhappy about this project; they got into a fight last night and ended up running over my face while I was trying to sleep.  Consequently I ended up with a nasty scratch on my nose so I had to put a chunk of a cottonball between my glasses and nose.  That made it a bit challenging to see!
